It has been an honor to serve as this year’s FBA/OC President. I took the presidency standing on the shoulders of notable past pres- idents, individuals who created and fostered this vibrant organiza- tion. Thanks to the hard work of my predecessors, the chapter boasts a dedicated Board of Directors and amazing community sup- port. We have an active and engaged membership, a strong roster of law firm and corporate sponsors, and the encouragement of our local judiciary. This leadership and dedication is the foundation upon which the FBA/OC continues to thrive. In the past year, the FBA/OC has lived up to its legacy of providing quality programming for federal practitioners and giving back to the community. We began the 2015-2016 term in October with our an- nual Judges’ Night, an event with 325 attendees, including 36 judi- cial officers. At that special evening, we presented the prestigious Judge Alicemarie H. Stotler Award to the Honorable Robert N. Block (Ret.), listened to Judge George King describe the State of the District, and installed our officers and directors. We followed that event in November with our Criminal Practice Seminar, titled “What War on Terror: Prosecutions of Home Grown Violent Ex- tremists.” Our speaker, Special Agent Wade Lee of the FBI, pro- vided insight into the investigation and eventual prosecution of lo- cal ISIS terrorists. We concluded 2015 with our traditional Swear- ing-In Ceremony, introducing young attorneys to the FBA/OC. At the event, hosted by Judge James Selna and Judge Arthur Nakazato, newly California-licensed attorneys were sworn into the Central District Bar. The new year got off to a great start with our Dueling Scholars pro- gram. Moderated by Judge Andrew Guilford, the sold-out event featured Miguel Estrada, partner at Gibson Dunn, and Erwin Chemerinksy, founding dean and distinguished professor of UCI School of Law. The scholars discussed recent Supreme Court cases and their impact. In May, we hosted the annual Civil Practice Sem- inar, during which Judge King and Judge Jay Gandhi, as well as Wayne Gross of Greenberg Gross, and Jennifer Romano of Crowell & Moring, spoke about “Winning at Mediation: Tactics and Tools for Negotiating a Favorable Settlement.” The event boasted over 100 attendees. We rounded out the summer with our popular Bench and Bar Series. In June, Judge David Carter presented “Worlds (Continued on Page 4) Panteha Abdollahi FBA/OC President
